Abstract

How does the presence of women in subnational courts vary according to their descriptive representation in provincial legislatures? This article explores this question through a structured comparison of four Patagonian provinces: Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and Santa Cruz, between 2011 and 2023. Additionally, factors with potential influence are observed, such as the descriptive representation of women in provincial executives, the mechanism for appointing members of the highest provincial courts, the legal gender regime, and the presence of gender judicial institutions. Based on official data, regulations, and the press, the findings show that the increase in elected female legislators is not necessarily accompanied by a greater presence of female judges in provincial courts, thus challenging the notion of a "contagion effect."
