Abstract

The victory in the 2023 presidential election of La Libertad Avanza had a significant impact on the Argentine political system. Debating party building theories and considering the distinct characteristics of the break-in parties, this paper investigates how the provincial parties associated with LLA were established, focusing on their leadership trajectories and discourses. Adopting a comparative analysis across five provinces, we aim to shed light on the conditions conducive to the emergence and consolidation of radical right-wing parties at the subnational level. We argue that, beyond the classic key role of the outsiders in these parties, peripheral political professionals (outliers) and pre-existing party structures were also fundamental. This study is based on electoral data, journalistic sources, social media, and semi-structured interviews.
