Abstract

Uruguay’s Broad Front (Frente Amplio) has always been a party with strong relationships with unions. The party also represents broader economic interests. This article seeks to analyze how the Broad Front performs the function of interest representation throughout the elaboration of its party manifesto. Three themes are chosen in order to describe in detail the complexities of intra-party democracy: labor, education and environmental issues. 17 in-depth interviews were conducted, and 17 documents related to the manifesto-elaboration process were analyzed. This article shows the pivotal role of organic relations between the party and social movements to understand the diverse ways parties channel social demands.
