Abstract

The article has two goals. On one hand, it seeks to describe the strategic location of provincial elections by Argentine subnational executives during 1985-2023. On the other hand, it seeks to test the impact of presidential approval levels and midterm elections on concurrent and temporal distance between provincial and national elections. Contrary to expectations, the results obtained from statistical methods indicate that, both in the absence and presence of political affinity between the president and the governor, the probability of concurrent elections during midterm elections increases. Additionally, some models suggest that both aligned and non-aligned governors tend to hold concurrent elections as presidential approval ratings rise.
