Abstract

Trust in the government is key in any democracy. This article a) presents the Trust in Government Index (ICG for its initials in Spanish) of the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, b) describes its operationalization, c) assesses its measurement validity and reliability, d) makes its database public, e) describes the evolution of the ICG during 2001-2024, and f) explores several possible correlates. The data come from national surveys that have been conducted monthly since 2001. The average ICG varies considerably between presidencies and within each presidency. Its dispersion is high but relatively stable. Multilevel regression analyses reveal associations between the ICG and gender, educational level, crime victimization, inflation, and income inequality. A “honeymoon effect” is also found. These contributions represent an initial step in a research agenda on trust in the Argentine government.
