Abstract

This article analyzes the effects that new voting systems can have on electoral behavior. Exploiting a natural experiment opportunity, we can estimate the impact of a new technology -and its respective ballot design- on sub national elections in Argentina. Our results are consistent with previous research showing significant effects on the proportion of positive votes, negative votes and splitticket voting. In addition, this exercise has other virtues: (a) we are able to integrate electoral behaviors into the analysis; (b) we add geographic variation with other relevant electoral regulations and (c) the research design allows us to do so by relaxing methodological assumptions.
